This page covers the minimum hardware and software requirements for running LabMaestro, along with installation and licensing information. After reading this page, you will be able to:
-
Verify that your system meets the requirements for LabMaestro.
-
Download and install the VPixx Software Tools.
-
Understand how LabMaestro licensing works with VPixx hardware.
System Requirements and Runtime Recommendations
The following are the minimum system requirements for running LabMaestro. These specifications are based on internal testing and are updated as the software evolves.
These system requirements apply to the LabMaestro software utility. Some VPixx displays may have additional GPU requirements.
Operating System
-
Supported:
-
64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11
-
Linux/Ubuntu 22 and 24 (Note: LabMaestro requires X11/XServer; it is not supported under Wayland)
-
-
Planned:
-
macOS support is in development and will be available in a future release.
-
Memory (RAM)
-
Minimum: 8 GB
-
Recommended: 16 GB or more
LabMaestro will launch on systems with 8 GB of RAM, but 16 GB or more is recommended for the following use cases:
-
Running complex, multi-device projects
-
Working with high-resolution displays or multiple monitors
-
Running MATLAB, Python, or other analysis tools concurrently
Graphics Hardware
LabMaestro relies on the graphics processing unit (GPU) to render the user interface, simulations, and experiment output.
-
Required: A dedicated graphics card
-
Not recommended: Integrated/onboard graphics (may result in reduced rendering performance)
For laptops with a dedicated GPU:
-
Ensure that the operating system is configured to use the high-performance GPU for LabMaestro.
-
Keep the laptop connected to AC power; some systems throttle GPU performance or switch to integrated graphics when on battery or in energy-saving modes.
Additional Recommendations
These are not strict requirements, but will improve performance and usability:
-
Processor: Modern multi-core CPU (e.g., Intel i5/Ryzen 5 or higher)
-
Storage: SSD with several GB of free space for project files, recordings, and VPixx Software Tools
-
Display: Minimum 1920×1080 screen resolution for full access to all interface panels

Installation
LabMaestro is distributed as part of the VPixx Software Tools package. Before installing, verify that your system meets the requirements listed above.
1. Download the VPixx Software Tools
The VPixx Software Tools installer is available from the Software Download & Information page.
Select the installer that matches your platform and follow the platform-specific download instructions.
2. Launch LabMaestro
Once the VPixx Software Tools are installed, LabMaestro can be started as follows:
-
On Windows, navigate to Program Files → VPixx Technologies and double-click LabMaestro, or use the Start Menu shortcut created by the installer.
-
On Linux, launch LabMaestro from the application menu or directly from the installed tools directory (e.g.,
/usr/local/share/VPixx Software Tools/Software Tools).
Licensing Information
VPixx Software Tools can be downloaded at no cost from the VPixx website. No VPixx hardware purchase is required to install and use the software. However, certain LabMaestro features require a licensed VPixx device to be detected.
A licensed device must be connected to access the following:
-
Full-screen output (Timeline and Experiment Views)
-
Watermark-free Experiment View
-
No warning displayed in the experiment pre-launch window
To initialize the Hardware Simulator, a licensed device must be connected once to verify the license key. The simulator can then be used for 30 days without a device connection (e.g., for remote development). After 30 days, the license key must be re-verified by reconnecting a licensed device.
The following VPixx devices include a LabMaestro license:
-
DATAPixx, DATAPixx2, DATAPixx3 (purchased in 2021 or after)
-
PROPixx Controller (purchased in 2021 or after)
-
VIEWPixx 12-bit or VIEWPixx /3D (purchased in 2021 or after)
-
VIEWPixx3 /OLED
-
Standalone USB license key (available from VPixx Technologies; contact sales@vpixx.com for pricing)
If LabMaestro is opened without a licensed device detected, a message will appear at the bottom of the window: Restricted Experiment Mode: No Licenced Device Detected.
